FOCUS Segments

Rigor Relevance is at the foundation of the resources on the Next Network. With this prior understanding, educators begin to see teaching and learning differently. However, recognizing the opportunity for relevant instruction doesn't always translate into motivated learning. During this FOCUS segment, educators will investigate learner engagement and how to increase active learner engagement during classroom instruction.

Prior knowledge of the Rigor Relevance Framework is essential to understanding the importance of thoughtful high quality assessments that requires students to demonstrate mastery in real world, unpredictable situations. Many teachers wonder, what is the first step - where do I begin? How do I get my instruction to match my assessment goals? Through this one-hour Focus Segment, educators will gain a deeper understanding of how to move instruction from Quad A to Quad D.

The Collaborative Instructional Review (CIR) is a tool educators can use to share feedback and create a shared understanding of key features of effective instruction. Both observer and teacher benefit from this experience. Through this one‐hour Focus Segment, educators will gain a deeper understanding of how to increase the level of rigor in classroom assignments.

Prior to workshop, participants should have an understanding of the Rigor and Relevance Framework®. For a quick review of the framework, view the “Using the Rigor & Relevance Framework” podcast. Relationships between teachers and students allow relevant learning to happen. When teachers know their students and build effective relationships, teachers increase their ability to reach students at their appropriate level of readiness. During this FOCUS segment,educators will collaborate on defining and implementing the importance of building relationships with students in their school.

Quad D moments are instances in which students are engaged in real world applications of rigorous learning. During this FOCUS segment, educators will investigate the importance of using Quad D moments as part of a Quadrant D lesson. This FOCUS Segment is specifically designed for secondary educators.
